Romans 5:17

A
B
C

For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (NKJV)

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

Romans 5:17 (NIV)

For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (KJV)

For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (NLT)

For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (ESV)

For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace [of unmerited favor] and the gift of righteousness [putting them into right standing with God] reign as kings in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

New Covenant Meaning

The Logic Is From Lesser to Greater

Paul's argument in Romans 5:17 uses the "much more" logic. If one man's sin was powerful enough to spread death to everyone, then how much more is one Man's grace powerful enough to bring life and righteousness to everyone who receives it? The comparison is asymmetrical in favor of grace. Adam's trespass did real damage. But the gift of Christ far exceeds the damage done. Grace is not merely equal to sin. It superabounds. Romans 5:20 says where sin increased, grace abounded much more. The "much more" is the theological weight Paul is pressing: Christ's work is categorically greater than Adam's failure.

You Reign in Life, Not Merely Survive It

Paul does not say believers will survive life or cope with life. He says those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life. The verb is basileuo: to reign as a king. The same word used to describe death reigning through Adam. The contrast is stark. Under Adam, death was king. Under Christ, you are the one who reigns. The domain is life itself. Paul is describing a New Covenant existence where the believer exercises kingly authority over circumstances, over sin, over death, through the grace and righteousness received in Christ.

The key verb is "receive" (lambano): those who receive abundance of grace will reign. Reigning is conditional on receiving. The grace and righteousness are available to all. What determines whether you reign is whether you receive what has been given. Many believers have the grace available but live below their covenant identity because they have not received it — not doubted it intellectually, but not personally appropriated it as their own. Romans 5:17 is a call to receive, not merely to believe abstractly.

Application for Your Life

You Are a Reigning Believer, Not a Surviving One

Romans 5:17 defines the New Covenant identity of the believer: a king in life. Not a victim of circumstances. Not someone death and lack get to push around. Someone who reigns through the One, Jesus Christ. This is not arrogance. It is the identity Paul is describing as normative for those who have received grace and righteousness. If your Christianity feels more like surviving than reigning, the passage is an invitation to receive more fully what has already been given.

Righteousness Is a Gift You Receive, Not a Status You Earn

Paul calls it the gift of righteousness. Not the earned righteousness. Not the achieved righteousness. The gift. You did not produce it. You receive it. And receiving this gift of right standing with God is what positions you to reign in life. The enemy of reigning is striving. When you are trying to earn your righteousness, you are not positioned to reign. When you receive it as a gift, you reign from a position of security, not desperation.

Prayer Based on This Verse

Father, I receive the abundance of grace that You have made available through Jesus Christ. I receive the gift of righteousness — I am not working for it, not earning it, not hoping I qualify for it. I receive it as a gift. And because I receive it, I reign in life through Jesus Christ. Death does not reign over me. Lack does not reign over me. Defeat does not reign over me. I have received the grace that far exceeds what Adam lost, and I reign through the One who gave it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
