John 16:23-24
"And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full."
John 16:23-24 (NKJV)
"In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."
John 16:23-24 (NIV)
"And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."
John 16:23-24 (KJV)
"At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy."
John 16:23-24 (NLT)
"In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full."
John 16:23-24 (ESV)
"In that day you will not [need to] ask Me about anything. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name [as My representative], He will give you. Until now you have not asked [the Father] for anything in My name; but now ask and keep on asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be full and complete."

"When that time comes, you'll be able to ask me for anything you want and I'll do it for you. You've been asking the Father for things in my name, right? Well, keep on asking. Don't quit. Ask and you'll get what you ask for."

New Covenant Meaning
Praying in Jesus's Name Is Not a Tag at the End of a Prayer
Many believers treat "in Jesus' name" as the religious period that ends a sentence. But praying in Jesus' name is a positional statement. It means you are coming to the Father as His representative, standing in His authority, presenting requests that align with His person and His purposes. It is the prayer equivalent of a legal power of attorney: you are authorized to act in another's name because you have been given that authority. Jesus says the Father will give you whatever you ask in His name because you are asking on the basis of who He is and what He has accomplished.
Until Now You Have Asked Nothing
Jesus tells the disciples "until now you have asked nothing in My name." This is striking. These were men who had been walking with Jesus for three years. They had seen miracles. They had attempted to cast out demons. But they had not yet understood how to pray in Jesus' name with the authority He was about to transfer to them through His death, resurrection, and the sending of the Spirit. The "that day" Jesus refers to is the New Covenant era that began at Pentecost. This is the era you live in right now.
Verse 24 closes with a statement about purpose: "Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full." The goal of answered prayer is not just provision. It is fullness of joy. God does not answer prayer reluctantly so that you can get what you want. He answers prayer so that His children experience the full, overflowing joy that comes from knowing the Father responds to them. This is the New Covenant relational dynamic: a Father who delights in giving good gifts (Matthew 7:11) so that His children's joy is complete.
Application for Your Life
You Have an Open Access Policy With the Father
John 16:23-24 describes a direct line between the believer and the Father through Jesus' name. You do not need a priest, an intermediary, or a spiritual status upgrade. The disciples who walked physically with Jesus had less access than you do in the New Covenant era. You come to the Father directly, in the name of His Son, and He gives you what you ask. Take advantage of this access. Do not shrink back from bringing specific, bold requests to the Father. He told you to ask.
Ask for Things That Bring God Glory
Praying in Jesus' name means your prayer is bringing the Father what would bring Jesus glory. John 14:13 says Jesus does what you ask "that the Father may be glorified in the Son." The filter for praying in Jesus' name is not just "do I want this?" but "does this align with what Jesus is doing and what brings the Father glory?" When your requests are shaped by His character and His purposes, you are praying in His name in the fullest sense, and the Father responds.
Prayer Based on This Verse
Father, I come to You right now in the name of Jesus. Not on the basis of my own worthiness, but on the basis of who He is and what He has accomplished. Jesus said whatever I ask the Father in His name, You will give it. I take Him at His word. I bring my requests before You with boldness and with joy, knowing that You are not a reluctant Father who has to be convinced. You are a generous Father who delights in giving good things to Your children. I ask today that my joy may be full, as Your Son said it could be. In Jesus' name. Amen.
