John 10:28-29 (NIV)

John 10:28-29 (KJV)

New Covenant Meaning
Two Hands, Not One
Jesus says His sheep are held in His hand (v. 28) and the Father's hand (v. 29). This is a double security: the hand of the Son and the hand of the Father. No one is able to snatch them from either. Jesus does not say no one will try. He says no one is able. The inability to remove a believer from this double grip is grounded in the greatness of the Father: "My Father is greater than all." The security of the believer rests not on the believer's grip but on God's grip. You are not holding on to God. God is holding on to you.
They Shall Never Perish
The Greek is emphatic: "they shall never, ever perish" (ou me apolontai eis aiona). The double negative (ou me) is the strongest form of negation in Greek. John 3:16 promises the same: whoever believes will not perish but have everlasting life. The perishing that sin deserves has been taken away. What remains is eternal life, already given, already possessed. Jesus says "I give" in the present tense: giving is ongoing. The eternal life is a present possession of the sheep, not merely a future promise.
The context is the Feast of Dedication (v. 22) where religious leaders demand that Jesus tell them plainly whether He is the Christ. His answer in verses 25-30 identifies His sheep (those who hear His voice and follow Him), describes their security in His and the Father's hands, and concludes with the statement that He and the Father are one (v. 30). The security of the sheep is inseparable from the unity of the Father and Son: what the Father holds and what the Son holds are the same, because They are one.
Application for Your Life
You Cannot Fall Out of His Hand
John 10:28-29 is one of the clearest passages on the security of the believer in the New Testament. No one is able to snatch you. The enemy cannot take you. Sin cannot remove you. Doubt cannot disqualify you. You are held in the hands of the Son and the Father, and the Father is greater than all. If you have been living with fear that you might lose your salvation, this passage speaks directly to that fear. The grip does not depend on your performance. It depends on the greatness of the One holding you.
Rest in Security, Not Complacency
The security of John 10:28-29 is not a license for passive drift. The sheep who are secure are also described as hearing His voice and following Him (v. 27). Security and following go together. But the following is not what produces the security. The security produces confident following, because you are not following out of fear of losing your place but out of love for the Shepherd who holds you. Eternal security is not complacency. It is the foundation for bold, fearless discipleship.
Prayer Based on This Verse
Jesus, I thank You that I am in Your hand and in the Father's hand. No one can snatch me out. Not the enemy. Not my failures. Not my doubts. The grip does not depend on how tightly I hold on. It depends on You. You give me eternal life. I shall never perish. I am secure — not because of my performance but because of Your power and the Father's greatness. I rest in that security today and I follow You from a place of confidence, not fear. In Jesus' name. Amen.
