Isaiah 54:17 (NIV)

Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)
"But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken!"
Isaiah 54:17 (NLT)
"no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord."
Isaiah 54:17 (ESV)
"No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you will condemn. This [peace, righteousness, security, and triumph over opposition] is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from Me," says the Lord.

New Covenant Meaning
Weapons Can Be Formed. They Cannot Prosper.
The verse does not say no weapon will be formed against you. It says no weapon formed against you shall prosper. This is important. The promise is not immunity from attack. It is immunity from defeat. Weapons will come: opposition, accusation, sickness, lack, betrayal. The covenant promise is that none of them will succeed. They cannot prosper because you are under a covenant that is stronger than anything that can be formed against you. The weapon may land, but it cannot accomplish its purpose against someone covered by this promise.
This Is Called Your Heritage, Not Your Achievement
God calls this promise "the heritage of the servants of the Lord." Heritage is not something you earn. It is something you are born into. You inherit it. An heir does not work for an inheritance; the inheritance comes as a result of relationship and position. For New Covenant believers, this promise belongs to you because of who you are in Christ, not because of how well you performed. Your righteousness is from God (the second half of the verse confirms this): it is imputed, not achieved. And from that righteousness flows the protection described in the first half.
Isaiah 54 follows the famous suffering servant passage of Isaiah 53 which describes the atoning work of Christ. Chapter 54 describes what the finished work produces for God's people: enlargement (v. 2), covenant that cannot be removed (v. 10), and protection of their heritage (v. 17). The protection in verse 17 flows directly from the work of chapter 53. Because the servant bore our griefs and carried our sorrows (53:4), we are now under the canopy of covenant protection described in 54:17.
Application for Your Life
Stand on the Promise, Not on the Circumstances
When a weapon is formed against you, whether that is a false accusation, a diagnosis, a financial attack, or a relational betrayal, your first response should not be panic. Your first response is the covenant: no weapon formed against me shall prosper. This is not denial. You acknowledge the weapon exists. But you deny it the right to prosper because you are standing on a covenant that is stronger than the weapon. This is what faith looks like in practice: you see the attack and you reach for the promise instead of the fear.
Tongues That Rise Against You Can Be Answered
The second part of the verse addresses verbal attacks: false accusations, slander, criticism, lies. God says you shall condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. Condemn here does not mean you become hostile or vengeful. It means you expose the lie, you refuse to accept the accusation, you declare what God says about you instead. You do not have to absorb every voice that rises against you. You are authorized by covenant to reject the accusation that does not align with who God says you are.
Prayer Based on This Verse
Father, I stand on Isaiah 54:17 today. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. This is my heritage. I did not earn it and I cannot lose it based on my performance. It belongs to me because my righteousness is from You. Every attack that has been launched against my health, my finances, my family, my reputation, and my future has no covenant right to succeed. I condemn every lie that has been spoken over me and every accusation that does not align with what You say about me. I am a servant of the Lord and this promise is mine. In Jesus' name. Amen.
