It's impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.

New Covenant Meaning

Two Beliefs That Make Faith Possible

Hebrews 11:6 identifies two foundational beliefs that are prerequisite to meaningful approach to God. The first is existence: God is. Not a general divine force or a vague spiritual energy but the personal God who is present and real. The second is character: God rewards those who seek Him. This second belief is often overlooked but is equally essential. A person might believe in God's existence and still not draw near, because they believe He is indifferent, demanding, or impossible to please. Faith that approaches God is not just convinced that He exists. It is convinced that He is genuinely responsive and good toward those who seek Him.

"Impossible to Please": The Absolute Claim

The statement is absolute: without faith, it is impossible (adunaton) to please God. Not difficult. Not unlikely. Impossible. No amount of moral achievement, religious activity, or sincere effort apart from faith produces what God calls pleasing. This is not because God is capricious or arbitrary. It is because relationship with God is by nature covenantal and relational, and a relationship in which one party does not trust the other is not a relationship in the fullest sense. Approach to God that is not grounded in trust of His character is not the kind of approach He calls faith-approach. Works without faith, however sincere, are not the currency of this relationship.

The context of verse 6 is the discussion of Enoch (v. 5): "Before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God." The writer asks: how does one please God? By faith. Enoch's life of walking with God (Genesis 5:24) is treated as the exemplary instance of the faith-oriented life that pleases God. The connection between walking with God and pleasing God is significant: it is not periodic performance that pleases but the sustained orientation of a life directed toward God in trust. The reward mentioned in verse 6 is what Enoch received: commendation from God and a life that was not ended by ordinary death but by translation into God's presence.

Application for Your Life

God Is a Rewarder, Not a Punisher Waiting for Failure

The second belief in verse 6, that God rewards those who seek Him, shapes how you approach Him. Many people approach God with the implicit assumption that He is primarily watching for failure, that the relationship is defined by His scrutiny of their performance. Hebrews 11:6 says that the right understanding of God includes the conviction that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Not a tolerator. Not a grudging acceptor. A rewarder. This belief changes the posture of prayer, of worship, of obedience. You come to a God who is actively disposed toward your good when you seek Him.

Faith Is Not Optional Equipment for the Christian Life

The absolute language of verse 6 ("impossible to please without faith") makes faith the foundational condition of the entire relationship with God. You cannot supplement a faithless religious life with enough good works to make it pleasing to God. The relational currency of the New Covenant is faith: trust in God's character, His promises, His word, and His Son. This does not reduce Christianity to mere intellectual belief. Faith, in Hebrews 11, is the active principle that causes people to act, to leave, to endure, to build, and to seek. It is demonstrated in how a life is lived, not just in what propositions are affirmed.

Prayer Based on This Verse

Father, I come to You in faith. I believe that You are: not a vague spiritual force but the personal God who is present and real. And I believe that You are a rewarder of those who seek You. I come with that conviction. I am not approaching You in uncertainty about whether You will receive me. I am approaching You in the faith that says You are real and You are good toward those who seek You. I want to please You. I know that without faith it is impossible. So I lean into faith. I trust Your character. I trust Your word. I trust Your Son. In His name I approach You now. In Jesus name. Amen.
