Doesn't that privilege of intimate conversation with God make it plain that you are not a slave, but a child? And if you are a child, you're also an heir, with complete access to the inheritance.

New Covenant Meaning

The Identity Shift That Changes Everything

The entire argument of Galatians 4 builds to this declaration: "You are no longer a slave but a son." The slave and the son may live in the same house, eat at the same table, and do similar work. But their relationship to the household and the inheritance is categorically different. The slave works to earn continued acceptance. The son already has it. The slave fears rejection. The son is secure. The slave has no inheritance. The son inherits everything. Paul is saying the New Covenant has changed your fundamental category from slave to son. That change is permanent and complete.

Heirship Follows Sonship Automatically

Paul draws the logical chain: you are a son, therefore you are an heir. There is no additional qualification. Sonship and heirship are inseparable in Paul's argument. The Galatians were being told they needed to add law-keeping to their faith to secure their standing. Paul says: if you are a son (which you are, by faith in Christ), you are already an heir. The inheritance is secured by the relationship, not by the performance. Adding law-keeping to secure the inheritance is like a biological son trying to earn his place in the will.

Galatians 4:6 sets up verse 7: "And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, 'Abba, Father!'" The Spirit inside you is crying Abba. That cry is not the performance of a slave hoping to impress a master. It is the natural, familial expression of a child to their Father. When you feel that cry in your heart, that instinct toward God as Father, that is the Spirit of sonship bearing witness to your sonship. Galatians 4:7 is the conclusion: therefore, you are no longer a slave. The inner witness and the theological declaration agree.

Application for Your Life

Stop Performing for God's Approval. You Are a Son.

The practical impact of Galatians 4:7 is the end of slave-religion. Slave-religion says: do the right things, avoid the wrong things, earn God's approval, and maybe He will bless you. Son-religion says: you already have the Father's love and approval as a gift through Christ. Now you live out of that identity. The works you do are not to earn the inheritance. They are the natural expression of a son who loves his Father and is grateful for what has been given. When you feel the pressure to perform for God's approval, remember: you are not a slave. You are a son.

The Inheritance Includes the Blessing of Abraham

Galatians 3:29 says if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 4:7 says you are an heir of God through Christ. These two passages together identify your inheritance: the blessing of Abraham (Galatians 3:14: righteousness, covenant relationship, the fullness of the Spirit) and the inheritance of God through Christ (Romans 8:17: everything that belongs to Christ). That inheritance is not something you earn or work toward. It is what sons of God in Christ receive.

Prayer Based on This Verse

Abba, Father. I receive the declaration of Galatians 4:7. I am no longer a slave. I am a son. The slavery to performance, fear, and earning that used to define my relationship with You is over. You sent the Spirit of Your Son into my heart and I cry Abba. That cry is the evidence. I am Yours and You are mine. As a son, I am also an heir. Everything that belongs to You through Christ is my inheritance. I receive it today, not because I earned it, but because I am in Your family. This is who I am. In Jesus' name. Amen.
