New Covenant Meaning
We Have Redemption and Forgiveness: Both Are Present Possession
Two things are stated as present possession in this verse: redemption and forgiveness. Not promised. Not available pending your qualifications. Not conditional on future performance. We have them. Both are in Christ, in Him is the location of the inheritance. Both are through His blood, the cross is the source. The price has been paid. The release is complete. The forgiveness has been granted. You are not awaiting redemption. You have it.
According to the Riches of His Grace: Sized to His Wealth, Not Yours
Paul does not say the forgiveness came according to your worthiness or according to the minimum required to cover your debt. He says it came according to the riches of His grace. The measure of what you received is the measure of God's own wealth. Riches of grace is not a minimal provision barely sufficient to cover your debt. It is a provision sized to the full abundance of God Himself. Your forgiveness and redemption are as large as the God who gave them.
Apolutrosis means release secured by the payment of a ransom. The price has been paid in full. The release is complete. Aphesis means a sending away: your sins have not been filed for future review or put on a payment plan. They have been sent away. These are not metaphors of partial relief. They are legal terms describing a complete transaction. In Christ, you have both the release and the dismissal of your debt. It is finished.
Application for Your Life
You Are Not Partially Forgiven. You Are Fully Released.
Many believers carry a low-grade sense of remaining debt before God, a feeling that their past still has some claim on them, that the forgiveness is real but not quite complete. Ephesians 1:7 makes no room for that. Aphesis is a sending away, a full dismissal of the charge. The debt is not on a payment plan. It has been sent away through the blood of Christ. There is no remainder. The transaction is complete, and you are the beneficiary of a forgiveness sized to the riches of God's grace.
In Him Is the Location. You Are Already There.
Everything in Ephesians 1:3-14 is located in Christ. Every spiritual blessing is in the heavenly places in Christ (v.3). Redemption and forgiveness are in Him (v.7). The inheritance is in Him (v.11). The sealing is in Him (v.13). The phrase in Him is not a theological abstraction. It is a location. And you are already there. You do not need to work your way into position to access what God has provided. You are in Christ. Everything He secured is already yours.
Prayer Based on This Verse
Father, Your Word says that in Christ I have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of Your grace. I receive that in full today. I am not partially forgiven. I am not still carrying a debt. My sins have been sent away through the blood of Jesus. The ransom has been paid. The release is complete. And the provision is not minimal. It is according to the riches of Your grace, sized to Your own wealth. I receive the full scope of what the cross accomplished for me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
