New Covenant Meaning

His Commandment Is to Believe and to Love

The commandments John refers to in this passage are identified explicitly in verse 23: "This is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another." John is not talking about the 613 commandments of the Mosaic law. He is talking about the New Covenant commandments that Jesus summarized: believe in Him and love one another (John 13:34). The basis for answered prayer in 1 John 3:22 is not perfect legal obedience. It is living in faith toward Christ and love toward people — the marks of New Covenant life.

Abiding Produces Confident Prayer

The confidence John describes in verse 21 is the foundation for the answered prayer in verse 22: if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. A heart free from condemnation approaches God openly. When John says we keep His commandments and do what pleases Him, he is describing the natural fruit of someone who has received grace and is walking in it. This is not a performance standard you have to achieve before your prayers qualify. It is a description of what the abiding believer naturally does — and the access to answered prayer flows from that abiding relationship.

1 John 5:14-15 is the companion passage: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of Him." The two passages together define answered prayer: confidence (no condemnation), keeping His commandments (believing and loving), and asking according to His will (alignment with His character). These are not legal conditions. They are relational descriptions of what it looks like to live in covenant with God.

Application for Your Life

Check Your Heart Before Checking Your List

John says whatever we ask we receive because we keep His commandments. The prayer life described here flows from a heart posture, not a prayer technique. Before asking whether you have the right words or the right amount of faith, John would ask: are you walking in faith toward Christ and love toward others? Is your heart clear before God? A heart that is right with God and walking in love is the environment from which answered prayer naturally flows.

His Commandment Is Not Burdensome

1 John 5:3 says "His commandments are not burdensome." The commandments John refers to — believe in Jesus and love one another — are not a heavy legal code. They are the description of New Covenant life. When you trust Jesus and love others, you are keeping His commandments. You are not carrying a burden. You are walking in the reality of what the Spirit has produced in you. The access to answered prayer is a natural result of that walk.

Prayer Based on This Verse

Father, I come to You with confidence — not because I am perfect but because I know You and I am walking in faith toward Your Son and in love toward others. Your commandment is not burdensome. I believe in the name of Jesus Christ and I choose to love. From that place, I ask. And I expect to receive, because You are a God who hears and answers those who walk with You. Whatever I ask according to Your will and from a heart of faith and love, I receive. In Jesus' name. Amen.
