God's Spirit and our spirits are in open communion. Spiritually alive, we have access to everything God's Spirit is doing, and can't be judged by unspiritual critics.

New Covenant Meaning
The Spirit Came So That You Would Know Your Inheritance
Paul identifies the purpose of the Spirit's indwelling in terms that are breathtaking: so that we might know the things freely given to us by God. The Spirit does not come primarily to make you feel good or to give you power for ministry, though He does both. He comes so that you can know your inheritance. Without the Spirit, the gifts of God are unknown not because they are not given but because the natural mind cannot perceive them (v.14). With the Spirit, you have access to know what God has already provided.
Charizomai: Freely Given As a Grace Gift
The word translated freely given is charizomai: to give as a grace gift, freely, without charge. Your inheritance in God was given without cost to you, though at enormous cost to Christ. These things have been freely given. The Spirit was given so that you could comprehend the full scope of what has already been provided. You are not working to earn what God has. You are learning to know what God has already given. The Spirit is the teacher, and the curriculum is your own inheritance.
Verse 16 concludes Paul's argument: we have the mind of Christ. The Spirit who reveals the things of God is the same Spirit who freely gives them. Believers have been given both the provision and the capacity to know the provision. This is the double gift of the New Covenant: what God has given you in Christ, and the Spirit who opens your eyes to see it fully.
Application for Your Life
You Have Been Given the Capacity to Know What Is Already Yours
1 Corinthians 2:12 answers the question of why so many believers live beneath what God has provided. It is not because God has not given. It is because the natural mind cannot perceive the things of the Spirit. The Spirit was given precisely to bridge that gap: to make knowable what has been freely given. The application is not to work harder but to lean into the Spirit's revealing work, to let the Teacher show you what is already in your inheritance.
The Spirit You Received Is Not the Spirit of the World
Paul's contrast is stark: not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit from God. The spirit of the world operates on scarcity, performance, and self-sufficiency. The Spirit from God operates on abundance, grace, and received provision. When you received the Spirit of God, you received a completely different operating system: one oriented not toward striving to obtain but toward discovering what has already been freely given.
Prayer Based on This Verse
Father, Your Word says I have received the Spirit who is from You, not the spirit of the world, so that I might know the things You have freely given me. I ask the Spirit to do exactly that today: open my eyes to the full scope of what has been freely given in Christ. I do not want to live below my inheritance because I have not yet perceived it. Spirit of God, teach me what is mine. Show me what has already been provided. Give me the mind of Christ so that I can comprehend the grace gifts You have lavished on me in Your Son. In Jesus' name. Amen.
